Missing IIT-K boy come back on his own and was supposedly on vacation
Arko Roy is 24 years old currently in the final year, an IIT-Kanpur computer science student, has been missing from September 9th for more than a month. He last contacted his father through phone on Oct 3rd. Due to his mysterious vanishing from New Delhi, his friends informed the IIT-K administrative authorities and a complaint was filed with the local police. He had gone to New Delhi for some visa related work and was supposed to join his friends for a holiday. When the friends tried contacting him in New Delhi he did not answer the phone and expressed his anguish in an email which he sent. As a result, the IIT-K higher ups came into action and informed the parents of Arko (on October 14), who in turn lodged a complaint in this regard with the Kalyanpur police on October 20. It was only after this that the police set out to trace the missing boy, but in vain.
Police from Uttar Pradesh, Delhi and Uttaranchal had been searching for him when on Wednesday late evening he came back to the institute on his own.
Roy told police that he had gone on a vacation as he “needed a break”. He also did not explain why he left without informing the institute to the police.
Arko, who hails from Durgapur, took Gomti Express from New Delhi on November 4 to reach Kanpur.
While the IIT-K authorities have decided to hand over the issue to the disciplinary action committee, the police too have decided to question Arko as a missing complaint was lodged by the institute and his family with Kalyanpur police station on October 20.
DIG (Kanpur) B P Jogdnand said that they will wait for Arko to settle down and then will question him to find out why he left without informing anyone.
The police, on November 3, got partial success as Arko was located to be around Paharganj area in New Delhi. He finally resurfaced on late Wednesday evening and is now stated to be safe in the institute’s campus, along with his parents.
Contradictory to the claims made earlier by the IIT-K authorities of Arko being on a `spiritual’ tour, IIT-K higher-ups confirmed here on Thursday that all throughout the boy had been with his girlfriend, a British national identified as Amy Blackburn.
A senior IIT-K official informed that Arko disappeared from the institute without intimating anybody and remained out of touch with his parents and institute for the last 45 days. Thus, it’s a matter of gross indiscipline and necessary action will be initiated against him.
A meeting was held by the IIT-K authorities with Arko present on occasion. Though the authorities refused to divulge the details about the meeting that took place but the sources informed that Arko was interrogated thoroughly in the presence of his parents.
DIG, Kanpur, B P Jogdand, however, expressed that CO, Kalyanpur police circle, has taken down the version of Arko Roy about his being absent from the campus for the last 45 days. Arko has confirmed of his stay in Delhi, Agra, Nainital, Rishikesh and Joshimath. He also accepted that during all this time he was with his girl friend of British origin.
