IOC fire affects placements of Engineering colleges in Jaipur
The Indian Oil Corporation fire has not only damaged the factories and the student hostels around, but also affected the future prospects of many students of technical colleges in Sitapura.
Meenu Saxena, training and placement officer at Poornima Engineering College, confirmed on receiving letters from several companies expressing their inability to conduct interviews scheduled in the first week of November.
Several companies, scheduled to visit these campuses for hiring this month, have postponed their interviews.
Mr Saxena said that many big corporate like Indian Navy, were scheduled to visit the institute from November 3. However, due to fire, they have postponed their visits and even they are not in a position to prepare the students for interviews as they have left to their native places or living in temporary arrangements.
R K Chaudhary, director, YIT engineering college, said that four companies, including two software companies, pharmaceutical and construction giants have postponed the scheduled interviews till January. He added that in an official conversation, they have raised health concerns over the depleting environmental conditions due to continuous release of smoke.
Sitapura Industrial Area houses more than 35 educational institutes including engineering, management and one medical college. These colleges have student strength of more than 25,000 while the number of potential job seekers is nearly 5,000.
Most of these students were struggling to find placements for their students following the economic slowdown. Now at a time when they received fresh approvals from the companies to hold interviews, the inferno came as a dampener.
Experts said that the resultant impact of damage in industries in Sitapura could be seen in the entire city in the short run. However, most of the industries in Jaipur offer jobs to students passed out from second-tier institutes though very few in numbears.
