Recently a state-of –the-art academic testbed of wireless mesh network was set up at the PEC University of Technology. The project is being funded by the department of information technology in the Union Ministry of Communications which is a Rs 46 lakh research project. Awarded in early 2009 it was to be executed in 18 months.

Five wireless mesh points are connected to one wireless mesh portal in the testbed providing a gateway for access to internet.

Prof Divya is the chief investigator of the sponsored project, said that the network was required to perform real time experiments and test and validate results obtained. She said that with this they will be able to deploy secure, scalable and reliable wireless connectivity which is of prime importance and need.

Sanjeev Sofat, head, department of computer science and engineering said that such a mesh can then be replicated for other solutions such as wireless video surveillance in nearby cities, WISPs, and city-wide wireless network. In addition to serving as an experimental testbed, the network is being used to provide wireless connectivity to the residential areas of faculty members
