Former President A P J Abdul Kalam was asked for the inauguration of Malabar College of Engineering and Technology at Desamangalam. He asked for integrated action for transforming India into a developed nation. He said that the five areas where the country had core competence for integrated action which had been identified are- agriculture and food processing, education and healthcare, information and communication technology, reliable and quality electric power, surface transport and infrastructure and self-reliance in critical technologies. He said that these areas were closely inter-related and if progressed in a coordinated manner, would lead to food, economic and national security. Making his observations on future technological development, Kalam said that nano-technology was the field of the future. He said that information technology and communication technology had already converged leading to information and communication technology (ICT). Information technology combined with biotechnology has led to bio-informatics.

Now, nano-technology is knocking at our doors and it will replace microelectronics and many fields with tremendous application potential in areas of medicine, electronics and material science. With material convergence and biotechnology linked, a new science called intelligent bioscience would be born which would lead to a disease-free, happy and more intelligent human habitat with longevity and high human capabilities.

The convergence of bio-nano-info technologies can lead to the development of nano-robots. When injected into a patient, nano robots will diagnose and deliver the treatment exclusively in the affected area and later, the robot gets digested, as it is a DNA based product, he said.

The former President spared some time to interact with the students on different subjects in the midst of his inaugural speech. College chairman K S Hamza presided over the function. Assembly Speaker K Radhakrishnan inaugurated the mechanical engineering block, Sayed Munawaraly Shihab Thangal, MPs E T Muhamed Basheer, P V Abdul Wahab, and others also spoke. General secretary T R Shamsudheen welcomed the gathering and college principal N D Winny proposed a vote of thanks.
