IIT Council Meeting Report on Single Common Entrance Exam - Prevention of Suicides in IITs - Establishment of new campus  The Indian Institute of Technology (IITs) Council Meeting was Held on September 14th 2011 Wednesday to discuss on the Various Issues like Single Entrance Exam,Fee hike proposal, Increase in Suicides in IIT Campus and IIT Delhi to Establish and extension Campus in Haryana State. Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal in the IIT Council Meeting Said that the Indian Institute of Technologies IITs has emerged as the global Excellence Institutes in India . All the Council Members Including the Members of parliament, chair Persons and Directors of all IITs attended the Meeting Conducted on IIT Delhi.

Proposed and Discussed Topics in IIT Council :

  • No JEE for IIT entry once the proposal rolls by 2013-14
  • Single test proposal to be discussed with states
  • Final score to be based on Class XII, aptitude test scores
  • Fee to go up from Rs 50,000 to Rs 2 lakh a year in IITs
  • Students to pay Rs 50,000 annual fee as long as they study
  • Balance fee to be recovered once students find jobs
  • Fee hike proposal subject to Finance Ministry’s nod

Single Entrance Exam :

IIT Council Discussed about the report Submitted by Dr Ramasami on Conducting a Country wide Common Examination for Undergraduate Programs Like Engineering and Science Courses. They also Discussed on the reforms that should be made in the Examination Process. The IIT Council has Notified the Burden of Multiple Entrance Exams which causes a Severe Stress on Students both Physically and Financially. They also Discussed on the Weightage would be given to the marks obtained by Students in their +2  CBSE or State Board Exams. The Report of Ramasami on Conducting a Single Entrance Exam will be Send to the CABE and Respective State Governments to for Final Decision. if this Proposal is Approved the New System Could be put in Place by the Academic year 2013-14.

Increase in Suicides Cases in IIT Campuses : 

IIT Council also Discussed on the Increase in the Suicide Cases in IIT Campuses because of Various Reasons. The Council has decided to constitute a Special Task Force which Included Students, Parents, Teachers and other Experts to Study on this Issue in Multiple dimensions and Suggest the some Measures to Preven Such cases in IIT Campus. The Task Force Headed by NIMHANS Director and  and parents, Teachers, Students and Professional Counselors which will Submit a Report in Four Months.

Establishment of IIT Delhi Extension Campus in Haryana :

The IIT Council has Approved the proposal of Establishment of an Extension Center of IIT Delhi in Haryana State. The IIT Council View that IITs Need  to Extend and made Collaboration with Industry, Society and academia going beyond Present geographical Boundaries. Officials said that there is a need to serve the technological Needs of nearby Engineering Institutions through the Development of Faculty in IITs.
